The Ride

Should you talk with any of the riders or volunteers from past rides, you will find that the actual physical ride was only a small portion of the event... fundraising, training, getting immersed in the cause and finally riding. The physical demands of the ride are one thing but the impact of the purpose of the ride and the stories of how fellow volunteers and riders have dealt with cancer in their lives is both inspirational and highly emotional.

This ride is somewhat unique in that we have a fixed start and finish time... 4AM to 10PM... and in that time we need to deal with conditions and manipulate rest times and pace to ensure our goal is met. In our first year we only had solo riders, attempting to complete the entire distance on their own.

Another unique aspect of this ride is that we ride together the entire distance as a team. We start together and we finish together.

In 2006 we had four teams of two complete the ride in relay style. One of our teams was made up of two people hugely impacted by leukemia. Duncan who lost his 14 year old son to the disease and John who was in the middle of battling the disease between his 2nd and 3rd marrow transplants. John had been a support driver for the 2005 Ride2Survive and was so moved by the event, he vowed to buy his first bike and train to do the ride himself. John was 61 at that point and both he and Duncan each completed about 300 of the 400 kilometer ride.

There are many stories of pain, enjoyment, camaraderie, suffering and joy that were shared by all who participated as supporters or riders. The Ride2Survive is a truly great event.
