Hi everyone!  What a great meeting last night.  Thanks so much for taking the time to come out. Tobin shared his experience as a first time rider last year and I just wanted to put it here for those who weren't able to be at the meeting.

"Last year I have to admit that my initial draw into the ride was the thought, "oh wow, a chance to do a 400 km supported ride! How cool is that?!? And, um, right, I might raise some money for this cancer thing too." My experience last year blew me away. It was an unexpectedly powerful emotional experience for me and by the time I rolled into Delta I was completely seeing it the other way: the fundraising was the point; the great ride was a nice fringe benefit for me." Tobin.

It was great to hear about the new ride options this year to expand this great event to even more people!

  • Ride from Kelowna to Merrritt with the team
  • Ride from Hope to Delta with the team
  • Ride from Delta to Mission and back to Delta with the team

Also cool will be the Skill Camps that will be a part of our training this year.

I've placed the charts from tonight's meeting (and the first one) in the Team Only area so feel free to use them at any events.

Ride Kit: There will be a kit order form sent to you via email very soon as we will need to have the numbers in for next Monday to LG. We will have approximate pricing to you then as well. The kit will be the same sizing as last year so if you know your sizes it will be simple. If you don't know your sizing, the fit kit will be availalbe at Cap's on the weekend to try on.

Well the Tradex fundraiser went great! Thanks to Adam Vitkay for all his hard work in setting up the display and organizing the volunteers to man the booth and ride.

I believe we accumulated about 20 hours of riding on rollers and trainers. I know Rich rode 118km on his rollers on Sunday!

We introduced the R2S to many people and raised $1,000 in the process!!

Thanks to all you helped out!

Please keep an eye on your junk mail for emails from Ride2Survive.ca

We use a mass email tool called iContact and some email clients will move that stuff into your junk mail folder.  There are usually some settings you can adjust so this doesn't happen.

Thanks.

Well, the weather wasn't the best but we had a great group out for our 1st training ride of 2010.

As one rider asked... "Is this what it is like on the top of the Coquihalla??"   Answer - "Yup!"

Many folks who have recently signed up to participate in the 2010 Ride2Survive have asked about our trainning plans.

Please stay tuned for this. Organized training rides will commence in Jan or Feb 2010.  This doesn't mean you shouldn't be out there riding now though! Embrace the cold, wind and rain; after all, you may face it all on the actual R2S.

Our training leaders are:

Liz Hargreaves and Greg Howard

Each year the Ride2Survive allocates the donated funds to areas of research, prevention and support through the Canadian Cancer Society.

That time is coming up soon and we as riders and volunteers need to decide. You can see where we sent our money in 2008 at this page . When we allocate our money in this way, we are able to ensure all of the donations go to where we think they should go.

This year, in order to open a discussion on the topic and help educate each other, we will open a discussion forum on the website very soon. This will be an opportunity for those who are passionate about where we should allocate our money, to make their case and have the discussion.

As an example, our past allocations have been largely for research areas but one that comes up in discussions is prevention. Since many cancers are preventable, perhaps we should aim some of our funds to this area.

As to prevention, the R2S, by getting people on bikes and physically active, is changing peoples lifestyle in a way that helps prevent cancer... we are setting an example!

On January 14th we held our first Orientation meeting and over 100 showed up!!!  Amazing!

What started out as just a few folks riding for the cancer cause has turned into something very special indeed. Thank you all so much for your dedication and energy that you bring to this.

We heard about the fabulous new jersey design that will commemorate this 5th anniversary of the Ride2Survive and as was the case last year, they will be available at cost.

The training plan is ready to go and if you don't have access to the "Team Only" section of the website, please review the instuctions on the page:  Join Our Team

What a special event this is turning out to be.

See you on Feb 20th at The 2009 2-hour Ride2Survive
